Golden Inspires Foundation (GIF-Ghana), in partnership with Untamed Voices and FemiAid360, held a two-day Deaf and Dynamic Skills Training Programme at Savelugu School for the Deaf. The initiative brought together approximately 60 Deaf students from Primary 6 to Junior High School 3 (JHS 3), providing opportunities to develop leadership, self-advocacy, health awareness, creativity, and practical science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) skills.
The programme was designed to strengthen students’ confidence, promote inclusive learning, and expose participants to practical skills that can broaden their educational and personal development opportunities. Through interactive sessions and hands-on activities, the initiative demonstrated the importance of creating learning environments where Deaf students can participate meaningfully, explore their abilities, and develop the skills needed to navigate future opportunities.
Day One: Leadership, Health Education and Creative Expression
The first day, held on 15 October 2026, focused on leadership and self-advocacy, health education and artistic expression. These sessions aimed to support students’ personal empowerment, encourage informed health decisions and provide opportunities for creativity.
Ms Emefa, a member of Untamed Voices, facilitated the leadership and self-advocacy session. Ms Emefa encouraged students to build confidence, recognise their capabilities and understand the importance of expressing their needs and participating in decisions that affect their lives. Self-advocacy is particularly important in promoting the inclusion of Deaf young people and ensuring that their voices are recognised in educational and community settings.
The health education component was facilitated by Ms Rahana, a member of GIF-Ghana, who led a breast cancer awareness session alongside screening activities. Ms Rahana highlighted the importance of breast health awareness, recognising unusual changes and seeking appropriate professional medical attention. By incorporating health education into the programme, the partners reinforced the need for accessible health information and opportunities for young people to develop informed attitudes towards their wellbeing.
An artist also facilitated the creative expression component, allowing students to explore their creativity through art. This activity complemented the leadership and health sessions by encouraging imagination, self-expression, and participation in a supportive learning environment.
Day Two: STEM, Robotics and Practical Innovation
On 16 October 2026, the programme shifted its focus to STEM education and innovation, with facilitators from FemiAid360 leading practical, hands-on activities.
The students were introduced to basic robotics and simple technological concepts through demonstrations and practical exercises. Activities included creating a simple air conditioner powered by dry cells and constructing a water dispenser.
These exercises provided students with opportunities to explore how everyday materials and basic scientific principles can be applied to solve practical problems. Rather than limiting learning to theoretical explanations. The sessions encouraged experimentation, curiosity, and creative thinking.
The practical approach also highlighted the value of making STEM education accessible and engaging for Deaf learners. By providing opportunities to interact with simple technologies and explore how they work, the programme encouraged students to see themselves as potential innovators and problem-solvers.
The activities supported the development of practical thinking, creativity and an interest in technology, while demonstrating how inclusive, hands-on learning can broaden students’ exposure to skills relevant to a changing world.
Promoting Inclusion and Meaningful Opportunities
The Deaf and Dynamic Skills Training Programme reflects the shared commitment of GIF-Ghana, Untamed Voices and FemiAid360 to empowering underserved young people through inclusive education and practical skills development.
By bringing together leadership, health education, art and STEM activities, the programme adopted a broad approach to student empowerment. Participants had opportunities to strengthen their self-advocacy, learn about health, express themselves creatively and engage with basic technological innovations.
The initiative also underscored the importance of recognising Deaf students as active learners with talents, aspirations and the potential to contribute meaningfully to their communities. Inclusive education requires more than access to classrooms; it also involves creating opportunities for learners with disabilities to participate, develop practical competencies and explore pathways that support their ambitions.
For GIF-Ghana, the programme aligns with its commitment to youth empowerment, equal opportunities and sustainable community development, particularly among underserved populations in Northern Ghana.
A Call for Action and Collaboration
While the two-day programme provided valuable learning opportunities, sustained collaboration is essential to expand access to inclusive education, accessible STEM resources, vocational skills and leadership development for Deaf young people.
GIF-Ghana therefore calls on educational institutions, civil society organisations, development partners, the private sector and community stakeholders to support initiatives that respond to the learning needs and aspirations of young people with disabilities.
Through partnerships and continued investment, more Deaf students can access practical learning experiences that strengthen their confidence, encourage innovation and broaden their future opportunities.
Golden Inspires Foundation (GIF-Ghana) extends its appreciation to Untamed Voices and FemiAid360 for their partnership and contribution to the programme, as well as Savelugu School for the Deaf for hosting the initiative.
Together, we can break barriers, amplify Deaf voices and build a society where every young person has the opportunity to learn, lead, innovate and thrive.
Different abilities. Equal opportunities. Limitless possibilities.
